PRP
Platelet rich plasma treatment at Leigh injection clinic uses cutting edge technology to promote the healing of ligaments, tendons, muscles and cartilage, through “turbo charging” the healing capacity of your own body.
Chronic degeneration of soft tissues occurs with an accumulation of microscopic injuries, leading to pain and disability. Research shows that the platelets in our blood contain many different growth factors a which play a very important role in healing.
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) treatment is an alternative treatment for orthopaedic conditions which traditionally require surgery or steroid injections. The downside of steroids (cortisone) being a temporary relief and long term weakening of the structure after multiple injections. Research suggests that every repeat cortisone injection, significantly increases the chance that an injected joint will need replacing in the future.
How is it Done?
A small amount of blood is taken in to a special tube and then centrifuged to separate your red blood cells from your plasma. The platelets in your plasma, are then concentrated 3-5x and injected back in to the damaged area using ultrasound guidance. The activated platelets release growth factors which stimulate the body’s natural healing response. This response leads to a reduction of pain and an increase in function, 6-12 weeks post treatment.
TROPOCELLS PRP
Not all PRP treatment systems are equal, and the quality of the PRP (and so the healing effect) depends directly on the system used. We use the TROPOCELLS system which is arguably one of the best systems available in the UK (more info at estar-medical.com/products/tropocells-prp/).
TREATABLE CONDITIONS INCLUDE:
– Patella tendinopathy
– Achilles tendinopathy
– Mild/moderate joint arthritis (e.g. knee, hip, shoulder)
– Tennis elbow
– Golfer’s elbow
– Runner’s knee
– Gluteal tendinopathy
– Low grade muscle tears
– Ligament sprains
– Tendonitis
What is involved?
Before your treatment, you will have a thorough consultation including a case history, a physical exam and an ultrasound scan or x-ray if required. You will also have a chance to discuss the risks and benefits of PRP during the consultation. If you are suitable for the treatment, it will go ahead on your return visit a week or so later.
Typically, the treatment involves 3 PRP injections, 1 week apart. You will be invited back for a free follow up appointment, 3 months and 6 months after your treatment.
Hyaluronic Acid
HA is an effective, single injection alternative to steroid injections. It is especially useful in mild to moderate arthritis of weight bearing joints such and knees and hips. It can also be used in tendon issues to reduce inflammation and pain. The two main advantages of HA over steroid are 1) Good quality HA injections usually give relief for longer periods than steroid, typically lasting for up to 26 weeks. 2) HA doesn’t weaken joints with repeated injections unlike steroid so can be repeated indefinitely.
We use the best quality HA available. We use Durolane for joints due to it’s highly cross linked nature, giving longer lasting relief (more info at durolane.com/en/). For tendons we use Ostenil tendon (more info at ostenil.trbchemedica.co.uk/patient-information/tendon-injections)
